Who Benefits From a Conversion?

A tub-to-shower conversion is a strong option when the bathtub is rarely used and stepping over its wall has become inconvenient. It can create a larger standing area, improve access, and make a dated bathroom feel more open. The decision is especially practical in a primary bath when another bathroom in the home still has a tub for children, guests, or future buyers.

The Existing Footprint Helps—but Does Not Decide Everything

Using the tub’s general footprint can reduce major layout changes, yet the new shower still needs proper drainage, slope, waterproofing, and plumbing connections. The location of windows, toilet clearances, doors, and adjacent walls affects what is possible. A site evaluation can identify whether the drain should move, how the curb or entry will work, and where controls should be placed.

Design for Comfort and Future Use

Useful upgrades include a handheld showerhead, a bench, recessed storage, slip-resistant flooring, and structural blocking for current or future grab bars. A low-threshold entry is easier to step over than a tub wall, though a fully curbless design may require more floor and drainage work. Controls can sometimes be positioned so the water can be turned on without standing directly under the showerhead.

Glass, Tile, and Maintenance

Clear frameless glass can visually enlarge the room, but it requires regular care. Half walls or partial panels may provide privacy and reduce glass area. Large-format wall tile can minimize grout joints, while smaller shower-floor tile helps accommodate slope. Behind every finish should be a complete waterproofing system designed to manage water at corners, penetrations, niches, and the drain.

Make the Choice With the Whole Home in Mind
